Local discoveries worth a visit

Independent cafés, bookstores, galleries and restaurants are the heart of any neighbourhood. Our writer visits them in person and describes what it is actually like to walk through the door. You get honest detail, not a list of adjectives.

Scenes from the stories we cover

These pictures come from the kinds of places our writers visit: festival grounds, quiet main streets, galleries and open shorelines. Each one points to a subject you will find in our pages.

Open-air festivals run through the summer in many regions. We write about the lineups, the setting and what it feels like to spend an evening there.

Corner cafés often become a neighbourhood's meeting place. Our local discoveries writer notes the menu, the room and the people who keep it going.

Independent booksellers shape reading habits in their towns. We describe how they choose stock, host readings and welcome visitors.

Regional galleries give local painters and makers a place to show new work. We cover the exhibitions and the people who organize them.

Trails along Canadian lakes are at their best in the fall. Our travel pieces describe distance, footing and what to bring along.

Seasonal markets bring growers and bakers together. We visit the stalls, talk to the people behind them and report what is worth seeking out.

About the magazine

An independent desk in Thunder Bay, writing for all of Canada

Lakeshore Ledger began in 2014 as a small editorial project and has stayed independent ever since. Our editor, Margaret Lindqvist, has spent twenty years writing about arts and community life in Northern Ontario. Four people make up the core team, covering editing, entertainment, local discoveries and photography. We keep a plain rule: curiosity first, honesty always, and a clear label on anything a business has paid to publish.

About
How we are funded

Free to read, supported openly by readers and sponsors

Regular articles on Lakeshore Ledger are free for everyone. Two things keep the magazine running: an optional ad-free newsletter and sponsored features from local businesses. Neither changes how we choose the stories we report on our own.

Free articles

Every regular story, guide and profile can be read without paying or signing in. We believe local culture should be easy to reach, especially for readers who simply want a good recommendation. Our editors choose subjects on their own judgment. A story appears because it is interesting, not because someone asked for it.

The ad-free newsletter

For readers who prefer a quieter inbox, we offer an optional weekly edition with no advertising in it. A sample edition lets you see the format before deciding. The price and the payment terms are set out on our prices page, so there are no surprises.

Sponsored features

Local businesses can commission an editorial feature written by our team. Every one of these is clearly marked as sponsored, so you always know what you are reading. They are arranged by written quotation, and the details are on our prices page.

How it works

From a first message to a finished feature

Readers and businesses both reach us through the contact page. What follows depends on whether you want the newsletter or a sponsored feature, but the steps stay simple.

  1. Send an enquiry

Write to us through the contact form. Tell us whether you are asking about the newsletter, a sponsored feature or a story idea, and include a few lines of background.

  2. Receive a written reply

An editor responds in writing, usually within a few working days. For sponsored work, this reply is a written quotation that lists what is included and what the price covers.

  3. Confirm the details

Once you agree to the quotation, we confirm the scope, the length and the timing in writing. Nothing begins until you have approved the terms.

  4. Writing and review

For a sponsored feature, a writer visits or speaks with you and drafts the piece. You check the facts, and we keep editorial control of the wording and the sponsored label.

  5. Invoice and payment

We send an invoice and you pay by bank transfer. Cancellations and refunds follow our payment and refund policy, which you can read before you decide.

Questions readers often ask

A few short answers about how the magazine works, what is free and how to reach us. If yours is not here, the contact page is the quickest route.

Are the articles really free to read?

Yes. Every regular article, guide and profile is free to read without an account or payment. We fund the magazine through an optional ad-free newsletter and clearly labelled sponsored features. Neither of these closes any story behind a wall, and our editors choose subjects independently.

What is the ad-free newsletter?

It is an optional weekly edition delivered without any advertising. It collects our best recent writing and adds a few extra recommendations. A sample edition lets you preview it first. Prices and payment details are listed on our prices page.

How do I tell a sponsored feature from a regular story?

Every sponsored piece carries a clear label at the top, so you will not mistake it for independent reporting. A local business commissions these features and our writers prepare them. Regular stories never carry that label.

Which parts of Canada do you cover?

We cover regions from British Columbia and Alberta through Ontario and Quebec to Atlantic Canada. Our team is based in Thunder Bay and travels across the country. Coverage depends on where our writers can go and see things first-hand.

Can I suggest a café, festival or story idea?

Please do. Write to us through the contact form with the name, the town and a few lines on why it deserves attention. We read every message, though we cannot promise that each suggestion becomes an article.

How can a business commission a sponsored feature?

Send an enquiry through the contact page. We reply with a written quotation, and after you confirm it we send an invoice payable by bank transfer. Nothing is purchased through the website itself.

How often do you publish new articles?

We publish about one article a day. Subjects range across entertainment, local discoveries, travel and community life. You can find the newest pieces under Latest Stories.

Where is the magazine based?
