Lakeshore Ledger was founded in 2014 with a simple idea: Canadians enjoy hearing about the interesting things happening near them and in other regions. We are based in Thunder Bay and write for adults who like culture, travel and community stories. Twelve years on, we are still independent.
The magazine grew out of a long interest in arts and community life in Northern Ontario. Margaret Lindqvist, our editor-in-chief, has written about those subjects for twenty years, and her desk set the tone for everything that followed. We began close to home and widened our reach as the team grew.
Our writers travel to what they write about. Daniel Tremblay visits venues across Ontario and the Prairies, and Priya Sandhu reports on cafés, galleries and shops from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. Being there, rather than working from press notes, shapes everything we publish.
Colin MacAskill, our photo editor, shoots the magazine's feature photography and regional landscapes and events. Good photographs help readers decide where to go next. We want images to show a place plainly and in good light, without exaggeration.
We earn our income openly. Regular articles are free, and the magazine is supported by an optional ad-free newsletter and by sponsored features from local businesses. Sponsored pieces are always labelled, and prices for both are published on our prices page.
Behind every article is a short routine that we follow on purpose. It keeps our recommendations honest and our readers well informed. Here is what you can expect from our writing.
We go looking for the festival, café or gallery that most people have not heard of yet. A good story often begins with one question asked on a walk through a neighbourhood.
We say plainly what we saw and what we liked. When a business pays for a feature, we label it, so you always know the difference.
